The Importance of Staff Training and Personal Development
3 min readThe most important thing to invest in your business is the people within it. The weight of retaining and nurturing existing talent in your team cannot be understated.
Staff training and personal development keep employees stimulated, engaged and progressing within your company, which naturally pushes your business forward.
Here at 3 Phase Marketing, we’ve put an emphasis on personal development in a program where each employee sets and works towards personally tailored performance goals and a structured learning and development plan.
An essential goal of ours is that all of our employees to walk out of our doors with more skills, knowledge and personal development than when they walked in.
Performance Goals
Performance goals are objectives set with an employee and their senior for specific duties or tasks within their role to benefit their work and the business further.
These goals are all about the employee’s role and setting tangible Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in regards to it. Here, each employee must think about each element of his or her role, what they need to excel, and how it can be measured.
Short-Term and Long-Term Goals
When devising performance goals with staff members, it’s important to compose both short-term and long-term goals.
Short-term goals, as the name suggests, are to be achieved in the near future. These can range from things to improve that week, that month or even that year and are measured in that same time frame.
Long-term goals are bigger picture. These should be more ambitious and aimed to be achieved over a longer period and through multiple steps over a process. Often, they are an ongoing progression without a set destination, for example, to be an agency at the forefront of digital trends.
Learning and Development Plan
Along with performance goals, it’s important that every employee undertakes some sort of learning or development initiatives. These need to be about the employee and what they want in relation to their career. This could be skills or behaviours they want to improve upon or ones they want to acquire entirely.
Ideally, these will benefit both you and the business and will be achieved through undergoing certain tasks with online or external training or with coaching opportunities.
Investing in your employees demonstrates to them your belief in them, while increasing their sense of value within the company and motivating them with continual goals to work towards.
Staff training and personal developments programs often don’t get the attention they need. They are a vital component of your business to reach all-round success and to be always moving forward and growing.
When strategising your for your business’s success you should be continually asking the question, “How are we prioritising staff training and personal development and can we be doing more?”
